Did someone say Century Bond? What’s not to like about the bond market? Rates are going to fall! Everyone wants to buy credit (at historically tight spreads) and the biggest most successful firms on the planet are paying 70 cents over Treasuries for your money! What could possibly go wrong?
Markets are less fragile than we think. There are always people watching, waiting and ready to catch bargains. Some risks are in plain sight. But in Private Capital Markets they are hidden – which is why many market players believe the scale of losses might be hidden. Will Private Markets trigger the next crisis? I doubt it.
The AI Bubble floats on a wave of Confidence – confidence the global economy needs it, the USA will lead it, the hyperscalers and AI firms can afford it, energy is not an issues, and competition from China, tech evolution and quantum are not future problems. All the market sees is opportunity. We've been here before.
Markets feel increasingly nervous. Although someone has cranked up the party music to 11, and the euphoria is still pouring, concerns about banking and loan exposures are rising. If there is a wobble, then it’s likely to be leverage on leverage that sees a bunch of private credit lenders in trouble.
When markets are hitting record highs is the time to be cautious, and ask why? US Stocks and Bonds are at record levels, despite the current uncertainties and policy instability. What’s driving it is a mix of themes, including market evolution. But also a market potentially complacent about approaching threats.
The narrative in US markets grows more improbable every day. Did Trump not threaten to sack Powell last week? And aren’t massive tariffs on China a guarantee of US victory? Apparently, that was just a dream sequence, and Bobby Ewing is about to step out the shower. Confused? You will be. Welcome to Trump – The Soap.
What’s not to like as the sun rises on a beautiful spring morning? Well… As the UK watches its public infrastructure tumble into wrack and ruin as a result of privatisation and financialisation, the USA is excited Elon Musk is doing such a great job at DOGE saving their tax-dollars. They might want to avoid a look at the shaky edifice of Musk’s tech empire as its core, Tesla, increasingly looks a hollow sham.
Very early start on the radio this morning, but Jamie Dimon and I are aligned; the global economy is at an inflection point as higher rates, stickflation, debt and climate costs hit the reset button. It doesn’t have to be a bear-reset and could present massive opportunities! Embrace change!
Let the games begin. 2024 is going to be… interesting. Whether its consumer debt, corporate default rates, banking worries or sovereign bonds there is plenty to be pessimistic about. The optimists think it’s going to be Goldilocks – what do they know I don’t?
Is it just me that finds Christmas and the Holidays to be overly stressy? They will be over too quick, and we’ll all be back as confused as ever. Here are some thoughts and predictions for 2024. The one thing I guarantee: The World is Changing.
