The difference between successful democratic economies and autocracy is that the rule of law works better. Autocracies trend towards corruption and inefficiency. Insider dealing and corruption is a fact of the financial markets – punishing it is a matter of the enforcement of justice and the willingness to do so. Europe is acting over Epstein. What’s happening in the USA? 

Bitcoin believers are perfectly entitled to believe what they want to believe. The rest of us: too clever to fall for the hype, or too stupid to understand – depending on your perspective, have grandstand seats for the BTC “how low will it go this time” championship.  

After a busy few days in London, I need some light comic relief this morning, so let’s figure out why Britain is really broken. It’s nothing to do with Government. It’s all about crap customer service and the treacle that makes Big Companies so poor. They no longer care. And that spreads like a cancer around the economy. Trying to deal with large firms and the private utilities that run the UK is like daily root-canal surgery.

What will the future look like? Many Porridge readers fear Technofeudalism – where a new aristocracy of big tech will replace democracy and make serfs of us all. What might it look like…?  

@Britishairways British Airways is something of a metaphor for Broken Britain. Doesn’t work very well, living off past glory and an uncertain plan for the future.

For the past 14 years UK Railways have been in decline – more costly, less reliable, more fraught. They are evidence of Broken Britain. The Labour Party has announced plans that amount to re-Nationalisation. They are prudent, sound and address the problems of failed railway privatisation in a reasonable manner… Can they do the same with the whole broken economy?

The UK is in “technical” recession. Broken Britain is the depressing reality. The bleak outlook will have profound and long-term consequence, unless we act fast to figure out how to fix the way the economy works. The key is better management.
