Pretty much as was expected Donald Trump has declared his war almost over. Its not. It has destabilised the global economy. What might be roiled in its wake? One area to watch is how a liquidity default-storm in Private Credit could infect global bond and equity markets, causing a global market crisis.
Markets are less fragile than we think. There are always people watching, waiting and ready to catch bargains. Some risks are in plain sight. But in Private Capital Markets they are hidden – which is why many market players believe the scale of losses might be hidden. Will Private Markets trigger the next crisis? I doubt it.
Markets feel increasingly nervous. Although someone has cranked up the party music to 11, and the euphoria is still pouring, concerns about banking and loan exposures are rising. If there is a wobble, then it’s likely to be leverage on leverage that sees a bunch of private credit lenders in trouble.
When markets are hitting record highs is the time to be cautious, and ask why? US Stocks and Bonds are at record levels, despite the current uncertainties and policy instability. What’s driving it is a mix of themes, including market evolution. But also a market potentially complacent about approaching threats.

The amount of “dry powder” earmarked for the Alternatives Market is said to exceed $4 trillion. While the sector continues to attract new money, the competition for deals should be rising – in fact finding good deals is more difficult as economic conditions remain tight and impose funding discipline.
The Bank of England is concerned about financial institutional risk associated with the rapid growth of private capital markets. A PE or Private Credit market crash would trigger a liquidity event which spawns crisis, but also massive opportunity. It will be yet another consequence of regulation and mispriced money in the wake of the 2008 GFC!
The Bank of England is worried about Private Credit Markets – good to know they’ve heard of it! Their concerns are valid, but it’s a market very different to banking and doesn’t share the same systemic risk triggers. Its full of opportunity!
