The Russians have captured the FT, apparently! The headline that Gilts are about to crash because the Government will borrow more to increase defence spending is Pravda 101. The reality is Gilts should rally on increasing the strategic deterrence that defence spending will create.
There are times when the course of history takes on a momentum of its own, most often in periods of conflict around hegemonic change – as exist today. This year’s Munich Security Conference will address stressed and fractured global alliances – while markets should be figuring out how conflict risks have risen and potential outcomes worsened.
The frenetic pace of activity in Washington this week has left the commentariat stunned while dulling the market’s sensitivity to momentous events. Some of it is madness, while much of what Trump is doing makes curiously perverse sense – but what are the risks it all spectacularly unravels?
Ukraine has demonstrated massive changes in how future wars will be fought. Yet, the military bureaucracies of Western Nations are mired in the procurement-treacle of 80 years of peacetime spending. It’s time for radical overhaul, and an explosion of private-funding to build a stronger Western economy through aggressive deterrence.
The new US National Security Strategy (NSS) revealed last week confirms just how much the world has changed. It was a kick in the teeth for Europe and leaves the door ajar on Taiwan. It’s unlikely to foster stability. It increases the pressure on Europe to swiftly rearm, and unify its defence and deterrence capabilities. For America – it raises fundamental questions about its declining power, strength, might and economic outlook.
The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. As Europe wakes up to the threat, the war in Ukraine shows how quickly the battlespace is evolving. Rearming the West requires a focus on decisive, scalable, deployable technologies to deter further aggression. Let me introduce Spitfire Strategic Capital – a new fund focused on War-Winning Defence Platforms.
Trump was right: NATO had become an American Umbrella. Europe needs time to re-establish its own defence capacity – and that requires respect on both sides of the Atlantic to achieve security without further destabilising global peace. These are “interesting” times indeed.
A new wind may be blowing in Washington. Trump has energetically bluffed and blustered his first 100 days, but now the wheels look loose. Time for some sackings and a refocus. Its beginning to happen and may actually prove positive. The place to start has been Ukraine and Defence.
The UK government intends to raise spending on defence by nearly 0.2% of GDP. Give me a break! The costs of trying to fight war on the cheap will be far higher than the costs of maintaining the Peace by being properly prepared to fight a war. To keep the peace means being prepared to fight – and fight hard. Such costs may bring substantial economic benefits.
Trump and Putin will agree Peace in Ukraine. The USA will walk away, leaving Europe to deal with the consequences of an unbeaten Russia. A new cold war will descend. That could provide the spark for a European rebirth around rearmament and a new unity of purpose, or instability as Russia seeks to pick off weak nations.
