The Age of Steam was perhaps the most influential technological paradigm shift since the innovation of agriculture. Railways and Steam Ships made the World smaller and fostered global growth and industrial innovation – leading to where we are today, perhaps on the cusp of the next big leap forward; AI technologies (although I would argue they are just the evolution of computing!)
For the past 14 years UK Railways have been in decline – more costly, less reliable, more fraught. They are evidence of Broken Britain. The Labour Party has announced plans that amount to re-Nationalisation. They are prudent, sound and address the problems of failed railway privatisation in a reasonable manner… Can they do the same with the whole broken economy?
As summer wends towards its end, a winter of populist discontent from left and right will make Europe increasingly fraxious. While the US economy will likely be on path to recovery – Europe will still be trending down.
Global Supply Chains could be stressed by the boat jammed in the Suez Canal. The lessons from the Pandemic offer an opportunity to rethink Global Infrastructure Spending – and mop up much of the money glut currently funding financial asset inflation!
