“As advocacy journalism, The Battle for Hamble succeeds handsomely: vivid, indignant, and genuinely illuminating about the perverse incentives and quiet statistical failures inside Britain’s planning machinery.”
Compare and contrast the USA and Britain. The new country and the old. Our problems are not in our inventiveness, our skills or our people, but in how our societies work. We suffer from Politics that don’t govern, Businesses that don’t share, and Bureaucracies that don’t deliver. These are problems of late-stage democracies in need of a reset. Politicians keep promising – maybe one day one of them will actually make changes!
The imminent departure of Sir Keir Starmer (it is a matter of when, not if) is bread and circuses. His defenestration will distract and amuse the chattering political classes and infuriate voters as yet more evidence of Broken Britain. But we need to be honest – it's not any single “leader’s” fault. 60 years of bad decisions piled on poor policies have landed the UK in the mire of the present. It can be fixed – but it will need a reset.
After a busy few days in London, I need some light comic relief this morning, so let’s figure out why Britain is really broken. It’s nothing to do with Government. It’s all about crap customer service and the treacle that makes Big Companies so poor. They no longer care. And that spreads like a cancer around the economy. Trying to deal with large firms and the private utilities that run the UK is like daily root-canal surgery.
The UK is in “technical” recession. Broken Britain is the depressing reality. The bleak outlook will have profound and long-term consequence, unless we act fast to figure out how to fix the way the economy works. The key is better management.
